The heart of any IRIS system is the parcel map base. The parcel maps are collected either
digitally or from existing paper maps which are then digitized. Any data
added to IRIS is corrected (if necessary) and then linked to this parcel map base.
IRIS maps are vector-based digital maps, allowing the user to create truly custom
maps with any zoom level and any layer configuration. Vector maps are also "intelligent" --
any entity displayed on the map is identifiable. The standard IRIS map base for an area
consists of parcel and street maps, with additional layers added on a case by case basis.
These custom layers can include building footprints and a variety of utility line types.
When the user selects the map tab, a custom map with the focus property
in the middle is drawn. Also on the tab are a variety of tools with which to
personalize and collect information from the map. These include:
- Unlimited Zoom Levels The user may select any zoom level between 1/100th of a mile
and 3000 miles in increments of 1/100th of a mile. (1/100th of a mile is about 50 feet)
Usually the default is to show parcels only under 1 mile and show street maps only at 1 mile
and above.
- Layer Configuration The user may select which icons and text layers to display
when the map is drawn. These layers can include points of interest such as schools, churches, shopping centers, and police and fire stations, as well as other information such as active and sold MLS listings.
- Custom Labeling The user can label the map either by selecting an object on the map
and assigning the selected information about that item or by placing a custom text label anywhere on
the map.
- How Far To...? This feature shows the user how far it is from the map center
to select points of interest such as schools, churches, police and fire stations, etc.
- Download an Area This feature allows the user to download data for a selected area
on the map. The user selects the area with their mouse, then chooses the data source.
The server creates a dBase file containing the information and downloads it to the user's machine.
- Measure Tools This feature allows the user to trace an area of the map and the program
will calculate the perimeter and area of the selection.
In addition to these features, the IRIS map tab also allows the user to do all of the standard
map functions: move, magnify, zoom, identify, search for address, etc.
